Martin Custom Shop D-45 Inspired Cocobolo Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar, Sitka Spruce Top

Music Store Live is proud to offer up this beautiful creation from our friends at the Martin Custom Shop department with some absolutely gorgeous cocobolo. Based off of a D-45, we definitely made this one a cut above the rest with the tonewood selections. What's the next best tonewood to Brazilian rosewood (which is now extremely rare, endangered, and very expensive)? Well, a lot of people would say it's cocobolo. It has a lot of similar tonal properties (warm, while still having a bright top end) and the figuring is absolutely stunning. So that's what we went with here as the main star of our show.

In late 2019 we traveled to Pennsylvania to hand-select the woods and appointments that would go on this run of exclusive custom guitars. This is the first one to roll in and we are absolutely stunned and thrilled. We went through what felt like every piece of wood in their vault and picked ones that we thought looked the best, but would also contribute to an incredible sounding instrument. So we kept in mind how the woods would look together, but also, and perhaps most importantly, how they would sound together.

We went ahead and put together a very high-end acoustic guitar with this one. But it's a lot more than just something pretty to look at. The guitar sings out like a choir of angels. The dreadnought body gives it a big bottom end while the cocobolo helps with the perfect amount of treble. It isn't too piercing but definitely stands out whether in a singer-songwriter situation or if you're playing with a band. The slight natural mid-scoop is perfect for not getting in the way of vocals while the punchy bass response will stay defined and articulate. The beautiful, bell-like top end of the guitar is perhaps one of the best parts. It's present in all the ways you'd want it to be and has that chime to it that is part of what Brazilian rosewood is so revered for. The combination of warmth, brightness, and articulation all dwell within this full-bodied dreadnought. The neck has a luxuriously silky satin finish while the body is glossed to really make the beautiful figuring in the woods pop.
