Player's Perspective

Groove icon, low end wizard, and fabled Tower of Power bassist Rocco Prestia worked with ESP for over a year to dial in the basses in his signature RB line. These instruments are good enough to bear Rocco’s name, but affordable enough for the everyday bass player. This RB-1004 is built with Rocco’s punchy, driving brand of groove in mind. Its tonal approach is simple: fatten up the high strings and give the low strings a little more detail. The tone is round and warm, focused in the low mids and very smooth on the bottom. This bass certainly has a modern vibe, but the tone has a refreshing amount of old-school thump. The neck is cozy, and the fretboard is easy to get around on whether you’ll be exploring the highest register or hanging out in the open position all night.

Special Features

This RB-1004 sports a swamp ash body with a strangely beautiful solid spalted maple top. The C-style neck is a 5 piece maple/walnut combination for rock solid strength and stability. Electronically, this bass is really decked out. It sports two great pickups from Aguilar – a reverse-style P in the neck and a reverse angled J in the bridge. The reverse pickup design is a simple but underutilized concept. It adds clarity and detail to the lows while giving the high-end a little more body, a perfect tonal palette for punchy, driving grooves. Grover tuners and a Gotoh bridge top off the design with great tuning stability and consistent intonation.
