Player's Perspective

Music Store Live is proud to present this USA G&L Comanche! A galaxy black finish adds some subtle flair to the looks of the guitar while the Caribbean rosewood fretboard has tons of figuring and character to it.

We have way too many good things to say about the G&L Comanche. This S style guitar plays like a bat out of hell, has killer tone, some wonderful pickup combinations and a terrific trem system to wail on. The final product is a mysterious blend of recognizable tones the likes of David Gilmour, Allan Holdsworth, Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa. But let's get something straight - these aren't your grandaddy's single coil pickups. They borrow from the split-coil P-bass design that Leo Fender made immortal in the electric bass community and incorporate that same hum-cancelling idea with beefy MFD pickups that really punch through anything.

The smooth sounding Z coils put out plenty of bite and thicken up nicely with a little crunch from a tube amp. They can also sound nice and mellow with a subtle twist of the volume knob. You'll never experience the icepick high end in the bridge or muddy neck and quack positions like some other S models can be known for. The Caribbean rosewood fretboard (aka chechen) is slightly denser than the more traditional Indian rosewood and sits somewhere between that and pau ferro in tonality. The same warm, round, and smooth tonal characteristics of Indian rosewood come out of the Caribbean rosewood, but this is CITES safe and looks really awesome! G&L has been using this in their custom shop and it is now available through their core USA line.

The playability is off the charts on this Comanche. You can play everything from conservative jazz to wailing, over the top Van Halen, and the guitar will keep up with you no matter what you throw at it.

Manufacturer's Description

The G&L Comanche is Leo’s final word on the traditional double-cutaway bolt-on axe. Fact is, the first thing you’ll notice about the Comanche is the distinctive shape of the Magnetic Field Design Z-Coil pickups designed by Leo Fender himself. These pickups deliver a bright and sparkly top end while offering a robust bottom end, all without any 60-cycle hum.

You’ll find plenty of power in the Z-coil pickups, but what’s surprising is how glassy and detailed they become as you roll back the volume and bass controls, the latter a part of the Comanche’s PTB (Passive Treble and Bass) system. What’s more, the Comanche includes a mini-toggle expander switch to allow neck+bridge or all three pickups together. In a pinch, the neck+bridge combo does a convincing faux ASAT Special. Talk about versatile!

Making the most of this delicious combo is Leo’s Dual-Fulcrum vibrato, a work of engineering art which allows bending up or down with unsurpassed stability, while offering a silky feel through its beefy aluminum vibrato arm.

The Comanche was the very last double-cutaway bolt-on guitar designed by Leo Fender, the culmination of everything he had learned during his amazing lifetime. Founded by Leo Fender in 1980, the Comanche and all G&L USA instruments continue to be made in the historic G&L facility on Fender Avenue in Fullerton, California, the Birthplace of Bolt-on.
