Player's Perspective

Music Store Live is proud to be an official Tom Anderson Guitarworks dealer. These pretty much take the cake as some of the nicest bolt-on guitars to roll through our shop!

With a veritable who's who of guitar players on their roster, it's easy to see why Anderson Guitars have become so highly sought after for pros and hobbyists alike. A brief glance of Anderson's endorsees includes names like Bob Seger, David Crosby, Dierks Bentley, Kirk Hammett, Keith Richards, Richie Sambora, Neal Schon, Vernon Reid, Tim Pierce, and the list goes on and on and on. Simply put, Tom Anderson and his crew are cranking out some of the most amazing guitars on the planet right now.

This Cobra is a sophisticated and classy instrument that can appeal to old-school players, modern-day shredders, and just about anyone in between that likes single-cutaway guitars that look beautiful and can back up its looks with tone and amazing playability.

The pickups have a vintage vibe to them with one foot in the door of modern technology. They sort of sound like P90's on steroids. They have a dummy-coil in them to make each pickup completely silent and hum-free. But you can also tap the coils to get a slightly more single-coil kind of sound from them too. The P90's are beefy and full sounding, so if you want something a bit more cutting and a bit thinner, you can get that in positions 2 and 4 or in position 3 with the tone knob pulled up. Perfect for the die-hard single-coil lover looking for something with the versatility of being able to thicken up a bit too. Or somebody that loves P90's but wants to be able to get a little bit of a spankier sound without switching guitars. You can get anything from traditional Tele-like sounds to something that is quite a bit thicker, beefier, warmier, and fuller while still having a simple control layout that won't allow you to get in your own way. The PQ1 and PQ2 pickups are definitely based off of traditional and vintage P90 sounds. They have a bit more body and character to them to allow for some more modern applications with distortion and different styles of saturation. They will still retain that P90 characteristic but they'll interact with your pedals and the front end of your amp a bit better. They're also hum-cancelling so you you can solo the neck or bridge pickup without worrying about extra noise.

Once again the crew over at Tom Anderson Guitarworks have absolutely hit it out of the park. The happy medium neck is simply divine and the playability of this guitar is immaculate. It's not a toothpick shredder-style neck but it's also not going to be chunky, by any means. It'll feel very familiar to anybody used to guitars of this style. Along with the simply perfect construction of it all, part of what makes this neck feel so amazing would have to be the fact that it's made out of rosewood. If you haven't gottan an all-rosewood neck in your hands before, make sure to do so ASAP! There's no better feeling neck material out there. Don't be surprised if you need a crowbar to pry this guitar out of your hands. You'll just never want to let it go.

When we were designing this guitar with the folks at Anderson we wanted something that would have that smooth, mellow, and sweet hollow-body sound but we couldn't bring ourselves to cutting a big f-hole in such a gorgeous flame maple top that we picked up out for this build. So we decided to go with hollow-chambering to both lighten the guitar and to provide that characteristic mid-scooped sweet hollow-body sound. Plus, with no f-hole, you don't have to worry about any feedback, either!

As with every Anderson guitar we've seen roll through our store so far, this one has left us all with our jaws on the floor. The guitar can cover so much tonal territory that it's really almost unbelievable. It's very much the type of instrument that you'll never want to put down once you pick it up. At only 6.6 lbs and built as perfectly as any guitar you'll ever see, you'll be fine playing it for hours and hours on end without worrying about back/shoulder problems or any hand fatigue.

Manufacturer's Description

From the moment Cobra T first appeared on the scene in 1992, its popularity has been utterly overwhelming.  Everyone who touches one, seems to want one, and rightly so. But why?
Cobra T is one of the only guitars on Earth (maybe the only one) that is a perfect blend between the formidable sonic muscle of a short scale guitar and the musicality of a long scale guitar. And the only way to get this wonderful blend is aboard a Cobra T (or Cobra S).
   - Cobra T is a short scale guitar. A shorter, 24 3/4-inch scale length means less string tension, fatter mids, and greater ease of bending and reaching.

   - Additionally, Cobra T derives much of its muscle and focused, aggressive midrange by virtue of a mahogany foundation. The Cobra body is attentively hand-selected, pure mahogany, crowned by an exotic wood top, usually beautiful, figured maple.

   - Cobra T's neck is a sleek and fast mahogany back, embraced by a premiere rosewood fingerboard.

But Cobra T has a bite that will predominate through any mix, on stage or in the studio, giving more life and dimension to every musical passage, an aspect that is usually difficult for most short-scale, mahogany guitars to achieve. Its geometry grants this gift, with its flat neck to body alignment and string through the body bridge choices, saddle tension is increased and clarity is exalted.

PICKUPS
What do Soapbar-style pickups sound like? The longstanding benefit of a Soapbar-style pickup is that they produce a sound that lives between the weaker F-type, single coil and the fat focus of a humbucker, giving you a sound nothing else can quite achieve. So, think of the wide bandwidth that a single coil pickup delivers—low, lows and stringy, musical highs. Now tame those highs ever so slightly so there is no “shattering glass” timbre, just clear string clarity. Add big, booming lows and give it enough midrange girth to not be wimpy in any situation—but not so much that it is mid-only like a traditional humbucker. Not weak but not overly hot—big enough to be dirty when pushed through your favorite amp and pristine when backed off—without 60-cycle hum! How cool is that? You have the much-loved Soapbar tone at your fingertips.

What’s the big deal? This coveted iconic musical “P” tone has not ever been achievable in a hum-canceling version—UNTIL NOW! Thanks to the Anderson PQ R&D department—real players jamming away until all hours of the night to bring P-performance under your control.

Technically Speaking? How about precision polepiece alignment—means string and polepiece engage in maximum communication. Also, the height adjustment screws have been moved slightly outward for easier and intricate angling and height adjustment.

PQ 1: Vintage level Soapbar for neck application, wonderful, rich and full, but not too bloated—and with no hum.
PQ 2: Vintage output bridge, full, rich, and gorgeously, hum-free.
