Player's Perspective

In December of 2017, we headed over to Maryland to hang out with Paul Smith and pick out some woods for our next run of Music Store Live wood library guitars. Mr. Smith, himself, helped out with some of the selections and the spec choices that we ended up with for these. When the master spoke, we listened.

The results are absolutely awesome and we've got our jaws on the floor. Music Store Live is proud to offer up this PRS Singlecut 594 with artist grade flame maple top and some smoked black hardware to give it a little bit of an edge. You'll get noticed as you stroll up to your gig with this before you ever pull it out of the case. The PRS Brown Paisley case is as attention-grabbing as the guitar itself.

This is a straightforward but effective design that has an upgraded Korina body and the most coveted tonewood of all for the fretboard - Brazilian Rosewood! The midrange in the Korina is amazing. This is almost like a "super-mahogany". It's got a bit of a sweeter midrange while also being a bit brighter than mahogany while having enhanced responsiveness that really brings out the dynamics in your playing. Korina is a difficult wood for luthiers to work with but it's absolutely amazing for guitars. That's why you don't see it used quite as often these days, but Korina (aka black limba) still drives up prices on old Gibsons, for example, and is a true throwback to the guitars that Ted McCarty, himself, used to build in the late 50's and early 60's.

It's worth spending some time playing this beauty without even plugging it in. The warmth of the rosewood, the snappiness of the maple neck, and mid-range of the Korina body all blend perfectly together. Overall, the guitar is a bit brighter than a CORE McCarty 594 while also having a smoother mid-range response.

You'll have no issues being heard even if you're playing in a band full of distorted guitars, keyboards, and who knows what else. You'll have the ability to punch through anything in your path with this if needed. With some simple twists of the tone knobs and taking advantage of the dynamic response of this guitar also makes it very easy to mellow out the sound and darken it up a bit. The extra thickness of the body also adds an incredible amount of sustain and resonance to the guitar.

The guitar isn't a featherweight, but it's also lighter than some of those boat anchor Les Paul's that sounded so good and it balances incredibly well. There's a reason those LP's sounded so great and having more of that gorgeous Korina for the back helps get more of that beautiful Korina tone and expressiveness to shine through. Every single note is not only heard, but felt in a very clear, articulate, and distinct way. It's genuinely one of the more resonant guitars this reviewer has ever held.

Get this bad boy plugged into an amplifier and the fun really starts. These pickups are amazing! They can get you a vintage sound that's going to be very reminiscent of some of the greatest Les Paul's in history but they'll also have no problems at all handling some more modern applications. You could really use this guitar for blues, classic rock, jazz, metal, and just about anything in between. The versatility is really impressive with such a simple control layout. The particular tonewoods that are unique to this wood library run really help make this McCarty Singlecut 594 a cut above the rest.

Ordering a standard Artist Package version of this guitar would be $5,500 and you'd still only come close to replicating this guitar. The neck would not be stained, the body wood would be the standard mahogany and not Korina, the hardware would be hybrid, and the case would be the black paisley case. So for less than that price, this wood library PRS is a blend between Artist Package and Private Stock features that make it truly unique.

What an absolutely stunning final product from PRS. This one checks all of the boxes aesthetically, sonically, and in terms of playability.
