Player's Perspective

Martin's D-42 is a fabled guitar that has been imitated for nearly a century. The sound is equal parts power and nuance. There's a delicious, potent low-end that you can really feel when you strum a big chord. (This is one of the models that made dreadnoughts notorious for their great low-end tone.) But the highs are equally detailed, crisp and subtle, providing a wonderfully balanced and expressive acoustic voice that you have to hear to believe. It's the sound that just about every dreadnought on the market reaches for but never fully captures. The neck shape is comfortable and smooth, and the fretboard ride is effortless whether you're a folk singer who will be hanging out in the first position most of the time, or a country soloist who will lean into some soulful bends.

Special Features

This iconic D-42 fuses classic, inimitable Martin construction with great aesthetics and tops it all off with a supremely comfortable neck. First things first - the top of this guitar is solid Sitka spruce and the sides and back are solid East Indian rosewood. This is a tried and true tonewood pairing for acoustic guitars that provides balanced projection and nuanced subtlety. It's a perfect match for the dreadnought body style, which naturally sculpts the low end. What's under the hood of this iconic guitar is just as important as what you can see. Under the top, the solid Sitka spruce braces are arranged in a standard scalloped, forward-shifted "X" pattern. This allows the top to vibrate more freely without compromising strength. It has a distinctly more pronounced tonal character than non-scalloped guitars. The dovetail neck joint is crucial to this guitar's sound and stability as well.

This is an iconic instrument that's every bit as musical, playable and relevant as ever. Perfect for the Martin aficionado or simply anyone on the hunt for the real deal dreadnought sound.
