Player's Perspective

Music Store Live is proud to offer up yet another masterful concoction from the laboratories of Fender's Custom Shop department! The Journeyman Relic is tastefully done. Just enough to make the guitar look like it's seen some long nights on the road and great times on stage, but your guitar also won't look like it's just been beaten and abused.

This guitar looks and sounds like your favorite Strats in 1964 and in a blindfold test, anyone would be hardpressed to accurately point out the differences between this and an actual '64. They really nailed! This guitar is as authentic of a replica as they come. The best part is that it'll feel well worn-in in the ways you want it to but will also feel new-ish where it matters. The neck is a good example of this. The back of the neck is sanded down gently and smoothly so that it absolutely feels divine and as though this guitar has been loved and played for a long long time. But the frets and the overall construction quality show that this is the result of over 6 decades of refining the build process of a Stratocaster. It's truly the perfect balance of being vintage in all of the ways it needs to be while still being extremely easy to play (which, let's face it, even if they sounded awesome, some of those old vintage Strats requires some work and effort to really get that sound out of them).

The hand-wound pickups are harmonically rich and sophisticated. They have that bell-like quality that we all love from single-coils and they sound crystal clear. Some Strats from this era tended to bridge pickups that could get really shrill and piercing. The bridge pickup on this guitar, while still being as bright as you'd ever need, doesn't seem to have those offensive treble frequencies that make you feel like there's an ice pick being driven through your eardrum. And thanks to the excellent shielding and handiwork of the engineers that wired this beauty up, the single-coil hum on this guitar is not as bad as they could tend to be on the ones that were actually made in '64.

While making some minor improvements on the traditional '64 built, Fender has still remained scarily accurate in tone and feel on this guitar. Since we can't get in our time machines and go back to '64 to get one of these, the Time Machine Series from Fender's Custom Shop is the next best thing... Heck... it might even be better.

Manufacturer's Details

We've taken the concept of reissue instruments even further by crafting meticulous replicas using the same techniques and tooling as the originals. Distinguishing itself from its 50’s predecessors, the 1964 Strat® introduced a slew of updates to players. Strutting a round-lam rosewood fingerboard, 3-ply parchment pickguard and a more dramatic sunburst on a two-piece alder body, the debut of modern Strat features garnishes this ’64 Relic in eye-catching fashion. To faithfully commemorate this benchmark guitar, Fender Custom Shop serves up a shot of vintage swagger with a Journeyman Relic lacquer finish, complete with a compendium of vintage-correct appointments, crafted in steadfast detail.

Among these period-specific features are a tinted quartersawn maple neck with a “ ’63 C”-shaped neck profile for exceptional playability, hand-wound ’64 Strat pickups for classic tone, vintage-style tuning machines and American Vintage synchronized bridge.

Additional features include 21 6105 frets, 5-way switch, Vintage Modified #2 wiring, bone nut and wing string tree with metal spacer. Includes deluxe hardshell case, strap and Certificate of Authenticity.
