Player's Perspective

Music Store Live is proud to present this 1954 Gibson J-200! Simply put, this is one of the best acoustic guitars we have seen to date. This J-200 plays wonderfully ( which you can see in the video ). It is set up very well and is not only one the greatest all time strumming guitars, it also burns with the best of the flatpickers. The action is low, the neck is straight and the guitar is very well intonated. The neck could not be any more comfortable. It is wide, fat, nicely rounded and absolutely luxurious. This isn't just an incredible vintage investment - this guitar will provide an amazing playing experience every time you pick it up.

Item Details

We probably don't have to tell you but J-200's manufactured before 1957 are extremely rare and collectible. This 1954 J-200 is all original with the exception of the frets, which were excellently replaced, and the truss rod cover. Everything else is original and in very good to excellent condition. The spruce top is almost as nice looking as the flame maple sides and back which are terrific looking. The infamous pickguard, open moustache bridge, the nut, the tuners and the hard shell case are all original. Serial number # A18239.

Also included is an exciting piece of case candy. This 1954 J-200 comes with its original bill of sale. First bought on January 5th, 1955, this guitar was sold for $185.46 and the case cost $26.25! The invoice is in a protected laminate housing and in great shape.

Overall Condition

This 1954 Gibson J-200 is in very good / excellent condition. The only thing of note is a thin center seam crack on the top that runs from the bridge area to the bottom. It has been professionally hydrated and repaired with hide glue and two cleats have been added to the underside of the top to prevent it from opening again. The bridge is not lifting and it does not appear that this guitar has ever had or needed it's neck reset. The binding is all in tact. There is typical checking to the finish, more to the back than the top. The neck finish shows some checking but is very clean. The refret job was very well done and the frets are in excellent condition.

This is a fine example of this rare and highly collectible mid 50's J-200. This guitar plays and sounds exceptional. This will be a great addition, if not the crowning jewel, to any vintage collection. Enjoy it!
