Player's Perspective

Music Store Live is proud to present this 1967 Valco Supro Thunderbolt S6420! We highly recommend this vintage amp for players and collectors who might be looking for a killer sounding 1x15 combo tube amp to use on gigs and in the studio. The tone this package is packing is totally authentic rock and roll and it literally couldn't be easier to dial in. We stand behind the claim that you can wrench Led Zep and Hendrix tones from this beast even if it isn't the exact amp used on some of those early recordings. We think this rig makes a killer tube amp for any studio environment. The 15" speaker pushes a fat amount of air through this cab and there is an unmistakably refined high end on this amp that makes lead guitar sound the hammer of the gods. Trust us. We'd rather keep this one for ourselves but unfortunately that's not the business we're in.

Item Details

Cranked up, this is one of the best sounding Blues / Rock riff and lead guitar tube amps ever made. The controls are simple as can be - Volume and Tone. Operating currently with a pair of vintage Westinghouse English made 6L6 power tubes and an older set of 12AX7 preamp tubes, this model features the black tolex with horizontal striped grillecloth. The original Jensen speaker has been replaced with an Eminence 16 ohm 15" that dates to 2000. The power cable has been replaced with a modern three-prong and the fuse holder has also been replaced. If you are looking for incendiary lead guitar tone, look no further. This amp will light up the stage and make a guitar god of almost anyone recording with it.

Jimmy Hendrix owned one of these amps and while it's unclear exactly which amp Jimmy Page used to record a lot of the earlier Led Zeppelin material, it certainly sounds a LOT like this amp! Think Zep's "Heartbreaker".

Overall Condition

This 1967 Valco Supro Thunderbolt amp is in good condition. Everything works as it should with no issues. This amp is fairly quiet too with very low noise, which adds to the fact that it's great in the studio. The tolex is good with very few nicks and rips. Likewise, the grillecloth is also very good with no holes. The lettering on the chasis has faded a bit and the amp in general shows the wear of an amp that was likely a basement jam amp for decades. It probably hasn't gigged much at all. The upgraded power cord and newer fuse holder make this a much more stable vintage amp to use regularly.

We think this amp would fit great in a studio cranking out hits, in the collector's arsenal of smaller killer sounding tube amps or as just your favorite tube-tone combo to rock on at home. It's simple, it rocks hard and you can certainly play some gigs with it without having to worry. What an incredible sound!
