Player's Perspective

Music Store Live is proud to present this 1959 Martin D-28 Dreadnought! This vintage dread is ready for anything you can dish up. It's got a fat booming low end, shimmering mid range and crispy highs that cut through very sweetly. The neck is chunky and very comfortable in every position. We have this D-28 set up so well that it plays flawlessly everywhere. There's no buzzing on the neck and you can rip super fast anywhere you please. It's also a giant sounding strumming guitar. The neck is straight, the action is fairly low and and the intonation is very good. Listen for yourself in the clip below. This guitar is BRAZILLIAN ROSEWOOD at its very best.

Item Details

Since it first appeared in 1934 the Martin D-28 has set the standard by which all other dreadnoughts must be judged. This late 50's model is an excellent example of a vintage D-28 that has been well played and stood the test of time only to beg for more. This D-28 is all original with the exception of the nut, the bridge ( the original is included in the sale however ), the frets and there has been some overspray and finish work. The scalloped bracing has had some work as well and is structurally sound with no issues. The mahogany neck features a soft V profile,an ebony fretboard ( which has been leveled a bit during the refret ) and pearl dot inlays. The Grover patent pending tuners are original. The Brazilian rosewood sides and back quite striking and beautiful looking, particularly the sides. This D-28 comes with a newer SKB fitted hard shell case. The serial number is #169870.

Overall Condition

This 1959 Martin D-28 is in very good condition. It plays and sounds excellent. This guitar has had some typical repairs over the years ( refret, neck reset, fretboard level, finish work, bracing work etc ). It has been well played and matured tonally in a way that is very pleasing. There is a small hole on the neck heel from a previously installed strap button. There are some smaller areas with finish chips here and there but nothing too scary or that you shouldn't be able to see in our photos. There are a few repaired cracks on the back of the guitar and on one of the sides. The bridge is in terrific condition without so much as a hair of a lift to it. This is a players axe, not a museum piece and it is worth every single penny. This guitar can be enjoyed for another 60 years. The guitar's most recent set of repairs were done by Martin certified repair and guitar repair guru Bill Whitsett at Whitsett Guitar Works in Lowell Mass.
